Joni Shook is the Program Outreach Manager at the Monique Burr Foundation for Children. She recently retired from Duval County Public Schools in Jacksonville, Florida, after 35 years in school counseling.  She was a school-based elementary school counselor for 20 years, and moved to the district level as an elementary counseling specialist for 15 years.  While at the district level, Joni oversaw numerous programs and was instrumental in leading the implementation of MBF Child Safety Matters™ in her district.  As a result of her advocacy, the program is now mandated in all elementary schools.

Joni’s first position in the field of human services was focused on helping parents who were struggling with child abuse issues through the Parents Anonymous program.  She feels that it’s very fitting that she would return to that work with a focus on education and prevention, and is thrilled to be working with the MBF team as the program continues to grow and expand.

In addition to working part-time at the Foundation, Joni is also very involved in the American School Counselor Association, both as a Lead RAMP Reviewer and an ASCA National Model Trainer.  She is also an instructor in the “Putting Children First” course at Hope Haven, which is a mandated parenting class for divorcing parents of children under 18 years old.  She is a native of Jacksonville and has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Florida and master’s degree from the University of North Florida.  She is married to Greg Shook and they have 3 daughters – Jill, Jennifer, and Kelsey.
